Do you think its too early to be thinking about career development skills?  Think again.

These questions are probably in most students' heads when they are at secondary school. Supporting our students in secondary schools with advice and information around where they want to head in a career path is an important part of their journey but the conversation needs to begin much earlier.

The aim of contemporary career development support is no longer to assist students to make a single career choice, but to equip them with career self-management skills that will enable them to respond flexibly to changing opportunities and circumstances across their lifetime. In this changing environment, career development practitioners may work within a wider student services support team, potentially comprising transitions teachers, vocational education coordinators or work placement coordinators.

As parents/carers, you are the greatest influencers of your child’s career decision making. Together with schools we can prepare young people for the many opportunities and challenges ahead.  We all need to be having career conversations with young people, beginning much earlier than secondary school..
